Vines

The estate occupies a favoured position on the steeply inclined hillside rising above the left bank of the River Douro; it dates back to the early eighteenth century and has been continuously passed on within the family. The stone walled terraces for the vines, holding the soil and resisting erosion, lie between 200m and 350m above sea level.

The estate is in Barrô parish that is found within the Baixo-Corgo sub-division of the Douro demarcation.

In 1999 the owners began a programme to renew the vines with the objective of producing a new wine of distinctive quality: TERRUS.

Planting of 3.500 vines per hectare enables good access for attentive handwork and if necessary, a vineyard tractor. Most of the vineyard faces west. The sandy, granitic soils are well endowed with nutrients and use of chemicals is severely limited.

The main varieties are Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Souzão with others specially selected to add distinctiveness through blending. The vines are tended by hand with extreme care and attention. The work represents a passion for quality, to be achieved under demanding conditions.
